On this page you will find our Mixed Touch Rugby Rules, information about our event format is set up to maximise your enjoyment of our Business Sevens event, Each team will have the opportunity to make as many connections as possible on the day with fellow professionals and colleagues alike both on and off the pitch.
Round Robin Tournament Format
Round robin league with teams initially playing for position in either the Shield, Elite or Plate stages.
The tournament then progresses into separate knock out phases with winners of which will progress on to the Semi Final and latterly to the Final.
Players are reminded that they are representing their company and the tournament is to be played in a competitive but fair and courteous manner.
Max 10 players per team, mixed teams (minimum of 2 women) £450 + VAT per team which includes:
- Player Refreshment Station
- Networking drinks reception and guest speakers
- Minimum of 5 ten-minute games
- Prizes for winning team, runner up, Man of the match in the final, top goal scorer, ladies player of the tournament, top fundraisers
- Buffet for players after tournament
- 10% entry fee donation to charity

General Rules
Here are the Mixed Touch Rugby Rules for teams taking part in Business Sevens events:
- Squads can consist of up to 10 players, plus 3 rolling subs allowed during each match.
- Teams consist of 7 players.
- Squads must include a minimum of 2 women.
- Minimum of 4 pool matches
- No tackle, only two handed touches. When touched, pass the ball within 2 steps or a referee will call for a ball place. Present the ball between your legs for another team member to pass along.
- Kicking is allowed but only on your last touch before turnover.
- No forward passes allowed. The ball must travel backwards for the play to continue.
- Turnover ball occurs when: a pass is forward, a knock-on, the ball is kicked out, or your 7 phases are complete.
- Matches are played on a grass surface, players can wear boots with metal studs.
- If the ball leaves the pitch, play will resume with a tap and pass.
- The attacking team have 7 phases of play to score a try.
- If the ball leaves the field of play, the ball will be thrown in (tap and pass).
- A red card in any match will result in the player being excluded for the rest of the tournament.
- If teams are not at the correct pitch 2 minutes before kick-off tie, without a valid reason, they will forfeit the game 3-0.
- Substitutions will be rolling throughout the game.
- The referee’s decision is final.
Mixed Touch Rugby Rules of Play
- Round robin group positions will be decided by points, then try difference, then tries scored, then tries against, then the head-to-head result against that team in the group. In the unlikely event that teams are still equal when all this is taken into account, then progression to the knockout stages shall be settled by a drop goal shootout.
- If a team receives more than 3 red or yellow cards this will lead to disqualification.
- In the round robin stage 3 points will be awarded for a victory and one for a draw.
- For knockout games that end in a tie after taking into consideration point differences, then games will be decided by a sudden death try.
- Substitutions will be rolling throughout the game with one on, one off.
- The referee’s decision is final. The referee will send off any player for verbal abuse.
- Swearing at the referee is an automatic sending off offence.
- A red card in any match will result in the player being excluded for the rest of the tournament.
- The organiser reserves the right to remove any team from the tournament at any time for not adhering to the Mixed Touch Rugby Rules.
- All players are advised to wear appropriate boots and clothing in the interest of health and safety. The onus is on the players to mitigate any potential risks involved in playing touch rugby and the organiser accepts no liability for any injuries that may occur on the field of play.
- Maximum squad size is 10 (7 players and 3 subs), 2 of which must be women.
- The event is open to any player who is 16 or over.
- Match length is ten minutes long, unless otherwise notified, and there is no change of ends.
DEFENSE
- Two-Handed Touches
- Two-handed touch tackles must be made at the armpit or below.
- Interception
- Defending team can intercept the ball during play or following an infringement from the attack.
- Simultaneous Touches
- Simultaneous touches from two defenders will count as one touch.
- Onside
- Defending players must be onside when the attacking team has been touched, otherwise it will result in a penalty.
- Retreat
- After touch tackling the opposition, the defending team must retreat by 3 meters.
- Conceding a Penalty
- After conceding a penalty, the defending team must retire 3 metres.
- Restarting Play After a Try
- After conceding a try, the defending team gain possession and play is restarted by a touch on the half-way mark.
ATTACK
- Touched
- After being touch tackled by a defender, the attacker must stop/go back to where they were touched, touch the ball onto the ground and the ball must be passed to a teammate.
- 7th Touch
- The team is allowed 7 touches before turnover. On the 7th touch, the ball carrier may kick.
- Backwards Passes
- The ball must be passed backwards. Forward passes will result in a turnover.
- No Try After 7 Touches
- If there has been no try after 7 touches, the ball will be turned over.
- Turnover
- A turnover may be called if the ball has been passed forward, knocked-on, kicked out, or when the team has been touched 7 times. If there is a turnover, tap and pass to restart play.
